Paradise Kikuyu looks best when kept between 3-5cm. Annual scarifying in mid spring will give it a facelift for the warmer months (see our Spring reno.)  In summer, mowing may be required every 7-10 days whereas autumn and winter growth will slow and mowing will only be required every 2-5 weeks if necessary.

A Paradise Kikuyu lawn is relatively easy to maintain! General lawn care such as regular mowing, whipper snipping and edging in the warmer months will keep your lawn looking its best. Be sure not to spread seed near garden beds & avoid over fertilizing when not required. Kikuyu’s self-repairing and hardy nature can mean that if left unkempt it can spread via runners. Paradise Kikuyu has been specifically tailored to grow smaller, narrower leaves that are less invasive in nature than other varieties.

Trials have shown that Paradise Kikuyu will retain its green colour right through winter, better than many other varieties of grass. While it will go dormant in winter, frost will not kill the kikuyu. When the warmer weather returns, any lighter areas patches will bounce back to their former glory. A dose of Paradise Kikuyu booster will help this along too.

While kikuyu seed can technically germinate in winter, it is not ideal. Cold weather or frost on the leaf can stunt or kill the seedling resulting in less desirable results. We recommend sowing in Spring or Summer.

Kikuyu does not die in the winter. However, being a summer active grass, it will become dormant, meaning growth slows right down so less mowing and watering is required in the cooler months. To maintain a nice green lawn longer into winter we recommend a Paradise Kikuyu Booster fertiliser application in autumn.

It’s important to keep the seed moist for the first few weeks after seeding to ensure proper germination and establishment. It may need watering a few times per day in hotter climates or a nice long soak before and after work. Once grass is established, watering can be scaled back. Though kikuyu can handle tough draft conditions, the optimal watering schedule to maintain a lush green appearance is:

Spring  & Autumn –  once a week for 20 minutes

Winter – 3 times per week for 15 minutes

Summer 30⁰C + 3 times a week for 15 minutes

It might be time for a Paradise booster fertiliser. Grass that is low in nitrogen may yellow slightly. In the cooler months Paradise Kikuyu will go into dormancy – this is a natural part of the kikuyu life cycle, much the same as all the other summer grasses. A Booster fertilizer in autumn will help the grass retain its green colour through this time.

Kikuyu is hardy in nature. Over fertilizing can mean a lot more mowing! For best results on established lawns, use Eykamp Seeds booster fertilizer in early spring. This is a special blend with higher nitrogen for restoring vibrant colour, and phosphorus to encourage growth. Another boost again in autumn can be applied if required to help it retain its green through winter. For new lawns, we recommend fertilising with Starter at the time of sowing and a booster around 6-8 weeks after you sow.

Mowing your lawn to around 5cm will knock the weeds down as well as stimulate the kikuyu to grow, thickening the grass & ultimately overtaking the weeds. Rolling compacts the soil and keeps the moisture around the seed for longer, increasing the chance of greater germination seed to soil contact. Don’t worry though, Paradise Kikuyu is also coated with super nutrients to help it flourish!

Spreading is simple! You can use a seed spreader or simply spread by hand as if ‘feeding the chickens!’ Our seeds are coated with a bright blue colour to help ensure an even coverage. You can view our quick seed spreading tutorial here.

Planting the seed approximately 10-15mm deep will see the best results. Planting too deep might see the seed not strike as well as expected.

Yes! In fact, growing a lawn from seed is the best option. Seed will germinate and establish in your soil just as nature intended. Turf on the other hand needs to set root through its own sod and while it may look like an instant lawn, it can actually take longer to properly establish.

Kikuyu is a perennial grass, meaning once planted you have a lawn for life!  Once established it can survive up to 12 months without rain and submersion underwater for five days, making it a very hardy and long lasting grass.

Your lawn is considered established when it is ready for everyday use.  Depending on conditions, your Paradise Kikuyu should be established, ready to mow, play and enjoy in approximately 5-6 weeks. You will need to stay off the grass until it is sprouted to approximately 4-5cm high. Once it’s there, it’s ready for its first mow, and once it has been mowed down to around 3cm it’s ready.

Germination is when the plant sprouts from the seed. It takes kikuyu around 7-14 days to germinate. Paradise Kikuyu has an average of 95% germination rate, and with around 500,000 seeds in 1kg you can be assured you can achieve a great piece of Paradise in your backyard.
